Note: Lawrence Currie's families are listed in the Gympie Pioneer Register Pre 1900. In 1862 Lawrence Currie and his brother James, both farmers, migrated from Ireland.
Lawrence Currie's first marriage on 15 August 1872 was to widow Ellen McTaggart [nee Mc Ewen] who had been left with five young children when her husband, Edward McTaggart, died in 1868. Five more children were born to Lawrence Currie
before Ellen died in 1877.
Lawrence Currie's second marriage was to Emily Key Kay on 8 May 1879 at Gympie;she bore eight children - Mary 22 March 1882, William Percival 2 September 1883, Charles Edwin 26 April 1885, Emily Delphine 9 February 1887, Henry Lawrence 25
July 1889, Rose Elsie 9 August 1891, Harold Francis 28 April 1894 and Leonard George 7 August 1896.
A report in Queenslanders, Pioneer Families 1859-1901 reads -
Lawrence Currie married Ellen McTaggart in Gympie 10 years after he arrived. He was quite successful in gold mining and also became a storekeeper in Gympie from 1880 until near his death in 1920.
He is listed as a Gympie Pioneer and was a well known colourful identity of the time. He had three children [in fact 5] to Ellen before she sadly died. He then remarried to Emily Key and they had a further six children [in fact 8]. They lived
all their lives in Gympie and are buried there.
