Small, Frederick William (b. 15 Oct 1860, d. 4 Jun 1943)
Note: Extracts from writings in 1995 by Hope Valerie Biddle, nee Berry, Great Granddaughter of John Frederick Small 1 -

"The most colourful character in the Small family was Frederick. He purchased a bullock team and settled at Camira Creek, drawing logs from the scrub for the mill. He was not a big man in size but of medium height and build and strong and wiry
as an ox. He had his mother's red hair, blue eyes and fair freckly skin. He grew up with a wild reckless spirit that no-one could tame, was quite a dandy too, riding about on a magnificent mount beautifully equipped with a gold mounted riding
whip and gold plated bit and stirrup irons.

"Fred was a deeply loving and generous man and loved a joke and a bit of fun. When he went to town [Grafton] he liked to get just a little tipsy, then he would go to visit his beloved stepmother [Louisa Henrietta Small] who was then living with
his sister Mary and her husband Wilford Johnson.

"He would cop a great scolding from Mary over the drinking. ....but he was so witty and such fun. He was completely devoted to his wife Florrie and they lived a long and happy life together and both died around the same time.....[Florence died
March 1943 and Fred died June 1943].

"The Smalls were very sympathetic towards the aborigines.......Fred loved the blacks and spent many hours a day with them and he could speak their language fluently. Once when he was a little fellow the blacks went walkabout and unbeknown to
the family Fred went off with them. When he didn't come home the whole station were out looking for him. They found his clothes by the river bank, but no Fred. Stepgranny [his stepmother] wept and wept because she loved Freddy and thought he
was drowned.

"Several days later the tribe returned to where they lived in the gully by the water and there the stockmen found Freddy, a little white body among so many dark ones. He was horribly sunburned and his stepmother was doctoring him up for a long
time after that."

Another member of the Noud family, Keith W. Noud, became a very wellknown horse race caller on ABC Radio in Brisbane. He was born at Randwick NSW in 1913. His parents were John W. Noud and Clara M. Ladrigan who married at Randwick in 1913.

Small 1, John Frederick (b. 24 Dec 1821, d. 15 Oct 1897)
Note: Born at Ryde in 1821 John Frederick Small 1 went to school at Field of Mars. He grew up on the family farm at Kissing Point in Sydney, then in 1839, at age 17 years, he moved north with the family to settle at Clarence River.

Chowne, Mary Matilda (b. 21 Mar 1815, d. 16 Oct 1860)
Note: The following is an In Memoriam published in The Clarence and Richmond Examiner following the death of Mary Matilda Small, nee Chowne -

"Within the last two days a gloom has been cast over our little community by the death of one of its members, Mrs J.F.Small. She had been suffering from influenza some time previous, and for some hours preceding her death she must have suffered
a martyrdom; but she had been released from all suffering, and we trust has gone to join those blessed mansions above "where the inhabitants shall not say I am sick".

"She was a devoted and faithful wife, an affectionate mother, a sincere friend and a true Christian. Her remains were followed by almost all the residents of this district, and the last tribute of respect paid to her memory must have been
gratifying to the feelings of the deceased's surviving relatives.

"Mrs J.F.Small had previously given birth to an infant son, who still survives her. Long will it be ere her memory will be erased from our hearts. Her loss will be severly felt by many to whom her heart and hand were ever open to assist or
relieve.

"By inserting the above you will oblige one who has reason to mourn the loss of a friend.

"Yours J.M. Ulmarra 18 October 1860."

Mary Matilda was known to have had "very red hair" and there is evidence that this has passed down through some descendants' families.

Green, Charles Henry (b. 21 Dec 1816, d. 19 Feb 1903)
Note: Charles Henry Green was baptised at St.Martin-in-the-Fields, Middlesex, London, on 21 December 1816. He was the fourth child of William Green, Tea Dealer of Strand, London, and Harriet Forster. He had 2 brothers, William and John, and a sister
Harriett.

The first record found of his presence in Australia was a newspaper report on 15 April 1845 that Charles Henry Green Esq, late of South Australia, married Caroline Stewart at Bathurst on 3 April 1845.

In September 1849 Charles Henry was appointed Commissioner of Crown Lands in the Bathurst district. For the next 6 years he was a prominent citizen of Bathurst and District. He obtained Occupation Licences over pastoral lands, the most
significant being acreage on Ophir Road, West of Bathurst, now known as Rock Forest. He conducted a wool washing business at Bathurst and purchased six blocks of land fronting Hope and Russell Streets.

Following the discovery of gold in the Bathurst area in 1851 Charles Henry was appointed Assistant Commissioner of Crown Lands Gold District under Commissioner J.R.Hardy. He rose to the position of Commissioner in 1852.

In 1855 Charles Henry took leave of his Commissioner duties and returned to England with his wife for "health reasons". There is evidence that he would be a beneficiary [along with his brothers and sister] when the Green Estate was wound up in
England but as record of the decease of his mother has not been found it cannot be established that this may have been another reason for his return to that country.

Charles Henry returned to Australia on the Dunbar, arriving at Sydney on 27 September 1856. On board were his brother and sister-in-law William and Mary Ann Frances Green and their son William Benjamin Green, all making their first visit to
Australia. That family purchased Mondure Station in Queensland in 1860 and Charles Henry spent some time at that run, during which he was appointed a Commissioner of the Peace.

From 1862 to 1878 Charles Henry, Arthur Hodgson and John Donald McLean were joint owners of Goomburra Station on the Darling Downs. Charles Henry then spent a year or two at Rose Hill, [Rosenthal?] Warwick, before returning to England in
retirement. At the 1881 Census he was living at Aratrum Villa, Andover, Hampshire as a Retired Sheep Farmer with his wife Caroline Madeline and two servants.

Caroline died at Andover in 1886 and in 1890 Charles Henry [aged 74 years] married Marguerite Susan Murnin [aged 34 years] at Ilkley, Yorkshire. The 1891 Census had them living at "Sunnyside", 30 Winchester Road, Andover, when a son, Charles
Murnin Green, was born on 12 August 1891.

Charles Henry Green died at "Sunnyside", Andover on 19 February 1903 and left his estate of 1373 pounds to his wife, who was Executrix of his Will. An Executor was Charles Townsend Gedye of 17 Craven Hill Gardens, Lancaster Gate, London who,
searching has revealed, was the husband of Grace Clifford Gedye [nee Murnin], a sister of Charles Henry's wife.

Charles Henry's wife Marguerite Susan Green died at Hastings District, Sussex on 20 March 1927. She left her estate of 1728 pounds to her only son Charles Murnin Green.

More details concerning Charles Henry Green's and his wives' lifetimes are contained in separate writings in Family History files.

Searching ancestry.co.uk shows Charles H. Green born 1817 London Middlesex, residing 1881 at Aratrum Villa, Ventnor, Hampshire, source 1881 census. Also appearing in ancestry search is Charles Henry Green born about 1817, died March 1903
Andover, Hampshire, source BMD 1837-1983.

Further information appears in the England 1901 census of occupants of "Sunnyside", Winchester Road, Andover -
